So who knew
when I was right out of high school listening
to Bon Jovi singing “Livin’
on a Prayer’ that I would still be
listening to them churning out hit songs
now that I’m in my (ahem) 20’s?
I thought they were just another hair band
that would go the way of most and end up
playing Bar Mitzvahs by the 1990’s.
But then again, who in the 60’s ever
thought they’d still be going to Rolling
Stones concerts now that those guys are
IN their 60’s? I guess Bon Jovi just
had a way of hanging on and changing with
the times. While I’m admittedly not
a huge fan, I do like a lot of their music.
That said, I wasn’t sure how to prepare
for their latest concert DVD release celebrating
their most recent album “Lost Highway.”
The last time I saw these guys in concert,
there was a lot of hair, spandex and high
jumps. I wondered how well Jon Bon Jovi
could still rock after cutting the locks
and dipping his toes in the movie acting
pool. And how had guitarist Richie Sambora
survived being one of the many, MANY rockers
that Heather Locklear has married? Then
there was the simple fact that this new
album was a little bit more country in flavor.
By the time the DVD came to the end, I had
decided that these guys just got better
with age.

No, they don’t jump all over the place
like they used to, but as they work there way
through all the tracks of the new CD you can tell
that they have improved as musicians. Every song
offers an enjoyable listen and the boys play to
the audience in a more subdued and personal manner.
This isn’t a concert that will make you
scream and cheer, but you will find yourself getting
lost in the stories the songs tell (and I’ll
be darned if I didn’t occasionally feel
like sparking up a lighter and holding it over
my head…). For those of you who are still
caught up in the past, there are three encores
that deliver “It’s My Life”,
“Wanted Dead or Alive” and “Who
Says You Can’t Go Home.”
The best part of the DVD though is the sound.
I recently upgraded my system to full blown surround
and the 5.1 mix and the concert sounded like a
concert should. The band hit me from the front
with full force, while the crowd in the audience
felt like they were sitting all around me. There
are only a few extras, most notably interviews
with all the band members, but honestly the concert
alone makes the disc worthwhile.
