When I was a
little kid, I used to dream that someday
I would be able to watch a movie about secret
agent guinea pigs. No really, I was a weird
little kid (which may have something to
do with why I’m a weird big adult)
and my dreams never really seemed to fall
in line with everyone else’s My sky
was always a different color blue than my
friends’. Anyhow, I couldn’t
believe my ears when I heard that one of
my childhood dreams was actually going to
come true. (Now if I could only get my dream
car… a 1963 Cadillac Hearse.)
The guinea pigs in question come to audiences
via Disney’s awesome CGI as “G-Force”
comes to DVD and Bluray. What is “G-Force”
you ask? Well, I’ll tell you. They
are the guys… er… guinea pigs
who are going to save our butts! When an
evil billionaire (aren’t they all
evil?) plots to take over the world, the
governmentally trained “G-Force”
is brought into play.

To tell you any more about the plot would simply
be giving away too much… as the plot overall
is pretty simple anyway.
“G-Force” is obviously a kid’s
movie. It’s loud, it’s fast and there
are ample amounts of inoffensive toilet humor.
My daughter is still running around yelling “…poop
in his hand… poop in his hand…!,”
much to my wife’s horror. Personally I find
it kinda cute… but that all relates back
to that weird little kid thing. Most of the movie
is pretty tame, and there are a handful of jokes
that make it a little more entertaining for adults
(well, smart adults). I have to admit that I prefer
my kid’s movies to have a little more humor
written in it that appeals to me, but it is not
a prerequisite to my liking it. If my daughter
enjoys it without having to dumb herself down,
then it’s ok by me.
Fortunately, “G-Force” has just enough
going for it to keep her transfixed and laughing.
I definitely enjoyed all of the references to
popular action flicks, as well as the vocal talents
of Sam Rockwell, Nicolas Cage, Penelope Cruz…
and especially Steve Buscemi (who’s addition
to any film elevates its value). I definitely
got a kick out of Bill Nighy playing the evil
billionaire, my only complaint being that he was
not given near enough screen time.
As I mentioned, you can grab the movie on DVD
or Bluray, but your best bet is the Bluray/DVD
combo pack. I love these because you get the Bluray
for the family room, which of course offers you
an awesome picture and sound (which this little
special effects spectacular looks great in), but
let the rugrats have the DVD for their room to
watch over and over again (after you watch it
with them!!). Then you can even get the Digital
Download. This little feature is good for some,
not so for others. I do like downloading the flicks
and putting them on my phone. That way if we’re
stuck in a long car trip and forget the DVD player,
my daughter can still watch a movie if she wants
to.
This combo pack also offers up the new Cine-Explore
mode which allows viewers a commentary enhanced
with picture in picture videos and the like. It’s
a really nice feature that really shows off the
Bluray’s capabilities. You’ll also
find some short featurettes with interviews from
director Hoyt H. Yeatman, Jr. and producer Jerry
Bruckheimer, a look at the animation process,
and the character of Blaster’s boot camp
training. There are also a few deleted scenes
and nowhere near enough bloopers. Heck, you even
get music videos from Flo Rida and Nelly Furtado,
and Steve Rushton. Altogether it’s not too
shabby of a package.
Don’t expect “G-Force” to rock
your household… except for the soundtrack
if you have a good system… but it’s
still a pretty enjoyable movie for the kids. But
like all kid’s films I cannot stress enough
how important it is to watch it with them, even
if you can’t get ‘into’ it yourself.
