There are so
many tales of heroism to be found in any
war, even if very few are found within the
ranks of our Commanders in Chief (especially
of late). Movies are made to celebrate the
lives of those whose heroism went far above
and beyond the call of any normal man. "Schindler's
List" in particular comes to mind,
in part because I still consider it to be
one of Steven Spielberg's finest films,
but mostly because it sparked an interest
that caused me to read more about Oskar
Schindler.
A much lesser known film that was recently
brought to my attention is "Howling
with the Angels." It is available on
DVD from First Run Features (a studio known
for offering superlative documentary and
foreign films to the public). This documentary
tells the story of Jan Bodon, a captain
in the Czech Army, who was recruited to
join up with the Nazis. Instead, he joined
up with a resistance movement and was even
selected to take part in the assassination
of Reinhard Heydrich (whom historians will
recognize as the "Butcher of Prague."

Though the film only comes in at a scant 45 minutes,
the story it tell is a fascinating one full of
intrigue. There are even twists and turns to the
Brodan's story that I will not give away here.
It is interesting to note that the facts as they
are presented in "Howling with the Angels"
come from the one source that at once one would
think would know everything about the subject,
Bodon's son…. director Jean Broden. But
suffice to say there were things that the son
did not know about the father, but learned through
painstaking research.
The DVD for "Howling with the Angels"
offers an additional short film "My Dear
Kassa", as well as an archival photo gallery,
some film notes and a biography of Jean Bodon.
