Resident DVDvil :: Seth McFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy Blu-ray

I love DVD and BluRay releases that I can’t just recommend to anyone. Being that it is impossible to offend me, I have to think twice about certain releases because not everyone is intelligent enough to NOT be offended by anything.

Fortunately a good number of Seth McFarlane fans fall into this category as they recognize his humor as going beyond simply bawdy (also love the old terms), but border on brilliant in terms of culture references.

Of course, shows like “Family Guy” and “American Dad” scrape by the censors by the skin of their teeth and as such they get away with a lot. But… they don’t get away with everything. If you‘ve ever wondered what McFarlane’s sense of humor would be like totally uncensored, look no further.

“Seth McFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy” comes to DVD and BluRay hot of the Internet presses. Here we have just under an hour of foul, disgusting, puerile, juvenile jokes, brought to animated life and looking like they were deleted scenes from the aforementioned “Family Guy.” There is no storyline, no plot… only scene after scene of the most ridiculously irreverent sequences ever strung together. Each sequence is introduced with a quick title card then we get hit with the brief bit.

So I’ve mentioned that the bits are uncensored, but the question remains… “Are they funny?” Well, to be honest they are hit and miss. In some cases the title card is actually funnier than the actual scene. In others, they are so shocking you don’t know whether to laugh or not. And admittedly, comedic genius though McFarlane is… some are just stupid. However, there are enough truly hysterical scenes to warrant the purchase, and if you are one of those viewers who really ‘gets’ his humor then you’ll find more to laugh at than most others.

The BluRay release I watched offers a fairly decent video, but there’s really nothing here to warrant me suggesting this version over the DVD. I say, use your best judgment with this. If you HAVE to have BluRay, go for it. But if it really doesn’t matter that much to you, go for the DVD.

I was hoping there would be a good sampling of extra features, but you’ll only find a short ‘red carpet’ premiere featuring some of the voice over artists and some character model sketches. Very light for a McFarlane release.

If you are a big fan of “Family Guy” and “American Dad”, you’ll definitely get a kick out of “Seth McFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy”, but if you’re not… well… stick to the simplest cartoons you’re I.Q. can handle.
