“Snow
White and the Seven Dwarves.” You
know, somehow the title says it all. What
do you even write in a review about the
animated movie that started all the years
of Disney magic? Magic. That’s a good
word to describe the film; it’s pure
magic from frame to frame. No computer tricks,
just beautiful hand drawn animation that
brings to life a princess, her evil stepmother,
seven adorable little miners and a prince
to live happily ever after with.
I cannot possibly count the number of times
I’ve seen “Snow White and the
Seven Dwarves.” As a kid I went to
the theater to watch it as a special event,
later moved on to VHS tapes, then to DVDs
and now to breathtaking Blu-ray. I have
so many copies of the movie sitting around
my house, yet I’m glad I have every
one. Most films that are continuously re-released
are kind of a pain, but not this one. Every
edition gets better and better. I’m
kinda wondering how the Crystal Shard version
will look in 40 years in comparison to the
Blu-ray of today!

But I’m not the only one in my house who
loves the film. My daughter adores it, and was
singing “Someday My Prince Will Come“
before she was 2… and on key! So whenever
the mood strikes us, we pop in the DVD and watch
and sing together. Now that we’ve had the
opportunity to see the Blu-ray I think we’ll
be re-watching it several times over the next
few weeks. I can still remember how vibrant the
colors were when the re-mastered version was released
a few years back. At the time I thought there
was no possible way for the film to ever look
better than it had at that moment. Not true…
not true. The Blu-ray looks fantastic! But what
is most fascinating about this edition in terms
of video is that you can see every minor detail
and every little flaw. It’s almost as if
you can see the animator’s brushstrokes
from frame to frame.
As far as Special Features go, all you have to
do is look at the list below to see that there
are enough of them to fill an entire weekend.
Whether sitting back to enjoy the history of the
film in “Hyperion Studios” or following
the “Magic Mirror” through a multitude
of features, there is something for everyone.
I’ve had the set for a couple of weeks and
STILL haven’t seen it all!
It’s also interesting to note that you
can pick up this edition two ways… DVD with
a Blu-ray included… or Blu-ray with a DVD
included. And yes there is a difference…
at least in the packaging. Both have all the same
features, but the packaging varies in size so
be sure to grab the one that best fits your shelf.
But no matter which you buy… be sure to
but it. It’s worth every magical penny.
