Yes, I am a
complete Disney freak. Everytime I talk
about a new Disney movie or DVD my friends
always chime in with, “Well you do
have a child so I see why you watch them…”
What they don’t understand (and I
often try to explain) is that I don’t
need to have a child to enjoy these movies.
I’m thrilled I have her to enjoy them
with, but I’ve never really grown
up myself so I can still enjoy the wonder
and magic of a good Disney movie. I still
laugh and cry like I did 40 years ago…
And I’m not one bit ashamed of it.
Besides I’ve always believed that
‘Imagination is Far More Important
than Knowledge’, much to the chagrin
of my college ‘educated’ buddies.
But I’m here to tell you that if you
are an adult, you can have all the education
the world has to offer, but without imagination
you are nothing but a hollow shell…
and truth be told… I feel sorry for
you. But I digress…

Last year Disney treated audiences to a movie
all about Tinker Bell. Of course, in the past
we all knew Tink as Peter Pan’s sidekick.
She never spoke, but boy did she have a temper.
In “Tinker Bell”, she was finally
given a voice as well as a bit of a back story.
My daughter and I both enjoyed that movie a lot,
but I had reservations because most of the fairies
in Pixie Hollow had… well… for a lack
of a better term… attitude. They were very
contemporary in their actions and speech, and
again had a little too much ‘attitude’
for my liking. Wasn’t really sure what my
daughter would learn from this. I just made sure
to talk to her about it so she understood that
it wasn’t always good to act like that.
This year, Disney has released an all new adventure
called “Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure.”
I mostly expected the same as the first film,
but was pleasantly surprised to find that the
story was much, much better and the ‘attitudes’
of characters past were nowhere to be seen. Here
we had fairies acting like one would hope fairies
would act. It was also much more entertaining
as it allowed for some great slapstick comedy
(which was timed very well) as well as some slightly
scary action. The film revolves around Tink being
chosen to build a scepter to hold the Moonstone,
which is a very rare item that allows for the
growing of an abundance of Pixie Dust. As you
might expect, her efforts go VERY badly and she
soon finds herself on an adventure to find the
way to set everything right again.
The Bluray release of “Tinker Bell and
the Lost Treasure” offers up a beautiful
transfer of the film, both in terms of audio and
video. Last year we finally added a great surround
sound system to our living room and this movie
surrounds you and pulls you right into the middle
of it. The picture is gorgeous, enhanced by the
beauty of the animation itself. As with a lot
of the other recent Disney Bluray releases, there
is also a DVD copy included. This is awesome for
those of you who don’t have Bluray in the
kid’s room. On nights when they feel like
watching it on their own, you have the option
to offer it to them. I was a little disappointed
to see that there was not a Digital copy included
as I am really beginning to enjoy having those.
On the other hand, there are several really nice
special features to get into. There is a pop-up
book fashioned feature where the voices of Tinker
Bell and her best friend Terrance take viewers
on a tour of Pixie Hollow. At first glance it
seems kind of cheap as it does not flow like and
animated film, but in actuality it has a great
storybook feel to it. There are also “Scenes
You Never Saw” and “Deleted Scenes”
that are very different from each other. The Deleted
Scenes are literally that in that they were written
in, but never used. They are shown in storyboard
format and I liked them a lot. Better though are
the Scenes You Never Saw which is made up of intentionally
created outtakes of goof and mistakes. Truly hilarious.
Additionally there is a feature on building Pixie
Hollow at Epcot in Walt Disney World. As always
attention to details is at the core of everything
the Disney Imagineers create. Finally, you’ll
find a music video by Demi Lovato.
From start to finish, the whole family enjoyed
“Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure”
and has already watched it multiple times. As
a matter of fact, we’re planning on watching
it again tonight! I highly recommend adding this
wonderful film to your library.
