These past few
years have been a boon for Superheroes.
Everything from theatrical motion pictures
to animated TV series has cemented the comic
book hero in not only the minds of kids,
but adults as well. The X-Men seem to be
of particular interest of late, having hit
the jackpot with two blockbuster movies
as well as an animated series. The series,
“X-Men Evolution” chronicles
the adventures of a group of young adolescent
mutants as they develop their superhuman
powers. They struggle to master them while
fighting the forces of evil, all under the
guidance of the esteemed Professor Xavier.
The series is a nice mix of old tried and
true X-Men characters and brand new heroes
in training.
Warner Brothers has been releasing the series
on DVD for a while now, and are preparing
to release “X-Men Evolution: Powers
Revealed”, which is the 6th volume
of the set.

It includes the 2nd season episodes “The
Beast of Bayville”, which features Hank
McCoy’s evolution into The Beast, and “Adrift”,
in which Cylops finds himself in search of brother
who was swept out to sea during a storm. In the
episode “On Angel’s Wings”,
we find a new mutant who wishes to become a guardian
angel for all those in need, but goes about it
the wrong way. Finally, there is “African
Storm” which focuses on Storm as she fights
hallucinations of ghostly shadows, which may not
only be in her mind.
The DVD also includes a couple of short extra
features, including an 8 minute interview with
Stan “the Man” Lee. Lee is the guy
responsible for most of Marvel’s most popular
heroes, and he generally shows up on any DVD featuring
one of his creations. I never get tired of hearing
from him, though. His excitement as he talks about
the characters is always catching and makes for
a fun listen. Then there’s a look inside
Xavier’s Institute, which is presented as
one of those “Welcome to…” films
that many colleges use. It’s actually kind
of funny. Then there’s a brief trailer for
the first volumes of this series, which feature
the 1st season.
Speaking of seasons, I’d have to say this
is my only complaint about these DVD releases.
I would much rather Warner Brothers release full
season sets, than these volumes. There are so
many TV shows that are doing this now, that it
seems kind of strange to release them piecemeal.
But again that is my only complaint as “X-Men
Evolution” itself is a really good animated
series, and having them in any format is worthwhile.
