Yesterday,
I was able to check out an advanced screening
of the new Austin Powers film, Goldmember.
Anyone who's followed the series knows the
story about the super secret agent from the
sixties who was frozen and thawed out in the
nineties to battle his old nemesis, Dr. Evil.
The first film was really funny. The second
was basically a rehash of the first one. A
tired script and not many really good laughs.
Basically, if you liked the first then the
second was okay. I kinda dug Felicity Shagwell.
Grrrr, baby. Very grrrr. The third installment
of the Austin Powers saga not only reacquaints
us with old friends but it also introduces
us to a new one... Goldmember! |
But before we get into the review of the film, allow
me to comment on the trailers that opened up the
festivities. The first one...Die Another Day. Die
Another Day is the title of the new Bond film. I
love Bond and this one looks like it's gonna kick
much ass. How very appropriate for them to advertise
it on Austin Powers. The other trailer.....prepare
yourselves. The other trailer hit the screen for
all of 3 seconds and I started cheering. The follow
up to last years fantasy hit The Lord of the Rings
: The Fellowship of the Ring is on it's way and
it's called The Lord of the Rings : The Two Towers
and the trailer is GREATNESS. I can't wait. The
Bond trailer gets an A-. It would have scored better
but there wasn't enough for me to get into. The
Lord of the Rings trailer gets an A+ for making
me climax in my chair. Thanks you.....now on to
the movie.
Dr. Evil has returned from space (See Austin Powers
2) and he's back to his old tricks. Trying to take
the world hostage and make millions....errr...billions....errr...kajillions.
It doesn't matter how much money he wants because
he'll be raking it in at the box office. This was,
without a doubt, the best film in the Austin Powers
series. Where the second one popped and fizzled,
this one soared. It made you laugh and laugh HARD.
The sight gags, the dialogue, the cameos, the story,
the characters. It was a real complete package.
The story is pretty simple. This time, we add a
new villain to the mix as well as two new heroes.
Michael Caine joins up as Nigel Powers, Austin's
shagadelic father. Beyonce Knowles is the newest
of the Powers Chicks as Foxy Cleopatra and Mike
Meyers gives us a "GOLDEN" performance
as the new villain Goldmember. There are thrills
and laughs and daring rescues and laughs and moles
and laughs and even some touching drama between
fathers and sons. Okay...maybe more funny than touching
but it's worth seeing just the same.
Will Austin save the world from the clutches of
evil yet again? Or will Dr. Evil succeed in his
maniacal plots? It all depends on the actions of
the mysterious man known as..."Goldmember".
I recommend you see it and see it SOON!! I'm still
sore from laughing. This one will require multiple
viewings.
Don't wait. See this one in the theater. |
