| You know, I haven't seen the original
in almost 10 years... I don't remember a whole
lot about it. I do remember liking it. I was pleased
with this movie as well.
Tim Burton did an excellent job of bringing this
world to life... I hear a lot of people complaining
that it's not a typical 'Burton' movie. Good!
It shows that he's got a range of talent. He doesn't
have to make a dark, moody movie with each project.
From start to almost finish, this movie was just
fun to watch. From Leo (Mark Wahlberg) crashing
into the planet, to the introduction of the apes,
the escape, the battle, the explanation of the
apes evolution. It's just a kick ass, fun movie.
I wasn't a fan of the ending though. Just screams
"Money Machine on overdrive" ... according
to a few people I've spoken with though, apparently
it's the real ending from the book. Never read
it, so I dunno... I still didn't like it though.
The only thing surprising about it, to me... is
the fact that they used it. I couldn't begin to
tell you which ending would be better suited for
it... but suffice it to say, the ending was a
disappointment.
The story basically follows Leo who trains monkey's
to pilot spacecraft, for research purposes. One
of his monkey's gets caught in an electrical storm,
and he rushes out to save it... but unfortunately
he gets caught up in this warp in time, and rockets
through time and space to crash land on this foreign
planet, sometime in the future. This is the story
of his attempt to escape from the slavery imposed
by the apes.
Along the way, he recruits humans, and a couple
of apes to aid him in reaching the promised land...
the birthplace of the apes... where a battle is
waged. The humans, apparently outnumbered, seem
to have no chance against the force of the apes...
until the wildcard arrives...
From there, it gets kinda silly. It's a good
idea... but in my opinion, poorly executed.
But all things considered, it was an enjoyable
movie, definitely worth a looksee, and will most
likely find a place in my DVD collection. |
