Two
outstanding actors unite for a special effects
film that revolves around the mythical beast
known as dragon. If you're anything like me,
you'd be, instantly, skeptical of the concept
of dragons ruling the skies in a post-apocalyptic
future where humans have dwindled in number
and every day is another struggle to survive.
You might even expect this film to be bad.
You would be WRONG!! |
Make no mistake. This was no deep or meaningful
story. Nor did the filmmakers try to make too much
of a statement with this movie. Reign of Fire is
the story about how humans awaken these sleeping,
fire breathing giants who terrorize the entire globe
and force all of the super powers to use drastic
measures against them. Between the nuclear fall
out and the wrath of the dragons, the world's resources
and civilization is greatly reduced. Mankind is
forced to dig deep tunnels hidden inside of castle-like
forts to protect themselves from any kind of dragon
attacks. Christian Bale plays Quinn, the protective
leader of a community on the outskirts of London,
England. As a child, Quinn was the first human to
ever lay eyes on a dragon and since, has dedicated
his life to helping ensure the survival of the human
race and rescuing and raising children he finds
along the way. Matthew McConaughey plays the role
of Van Zan, a special forces commando who leads
his party of dragon slayers around the world to
find the source of the dragon infestation and eliminate
it. This will NOT be an easy task.
Reign of Fire is fun, entertaining and, at points,
keeps you on the edge of your seat. Visually, we
have a beautiful film. The digital effects are almost
seamless with the film. The dragons have soo much
substance and seem soo real up on the screen. The
angles and visual style, especially the little "dragon
vision" shots are really impressive. Almost
reminiscent of the Predator and his fancy radar
vision. The hilly locale and the sets give this
"Mad Max meets Jurassic Park" a very fantasy,
middle ages feel.
The pace of the story is really quick and exciting
for most of the film but there are a few slow points.
However, it's not without reason. The story slows
down so we can identify with the characters and
then "zoom" it's dragon slayin' time again.
If I would change anything, I'd suggest maybe a
few more scenes with the dragons. I just couldn't
get enough of them. But they were MEAN MOTHER SCRATCHERS!!!
I enjoyed this film. I went in not expecting a whole
hell of a lot more than just an entertaining action
film. It was that... but it delivered a little more
satisfaction than I was expecting. It was a breath
of fresh air after that shitty Road to Perdition
business. Besides, how can I deny a film that has
an Empire Strikes Back reference in it? That instantly
gets it points in my eyes. But seriously, if you're
looking for an action film with some thrills and
really impressive special effects... check out Reign
of Fire. It gets the Joe Seal of Approval. |

| I give it a 7 out of 10.
Would have gotten more if I wasn't drooling on myself
from the cool looking dragons |
