DarkWolf and I were recently
able to check out the new Elizabeth Hurley/Matthew
Perry flick, Serving Sara. The story
of a process server, a rich man's wife and
the things that bring them together and
the funny things that ensue.
Matthew Perry plays Joe Tyler, a hot shot
process server who specializes in serving
court papers to citizens around the nation.
Cedric the Entertainer plays his hot headed
but always funny, boss. And "Big Pussy"
himself, Vincent Pastore, plays a rival
process server that's been tipping off Joe's
paper....served.....people. |
A high paying job comes down and it ends up going
to Joe. He has to serve a rich man's wife
some divorce papers. That rich man's wife
is Sara Moore, played by the ever gorgeous Elizabeth
Hurley. After a few mishaps, Joe serves
sara (see where the title comes from?) and, after
a run in with some vengeful mobsters, makes his
way back home. Caught on a bus together,
Sara finds out that by having papers served by
her husband, that she is held under the lax divorce
laws of the state of Texas and is entitled to
very little of her husband's estate. If
she could find a way to have a hold put on her
papers and get her husband served first, she can
sue him under New York state law and take (to
quote Eddie Murphy) "half his shit". Sara
convinces Joe to help her and thus the story unfolds.
The story actually moves along at a pretty
good pace. Not too much lag. There's
one scene in a hotel room that kinda drags a bit
and stinks of useless plot development but, other
than that, the film is actually an entertaining
experience. Obviously, we're not talking
about an Oscar winner but as far as romantic comedies
go, it's worth the cash.
Matthew Perry comes off with his usual, dry
wit and an almost naive charm that makes him a
fun character to watch. It's interesting
to see him, suddenly, gain weight in the middle
of the movie. Poor guy was in and out of
rehab for almost the entire filming of this flick.
Elizabeth Hurley is, as usual, sexy and cute and
the complete focus every time she hits the screen.
Not exactly a stretch for her but she still gives
a funny performance.

One
of the funnier characters in the movie is
Vinny Pastore as Tony. The mean hearted
and underhanded process server that's ever
on Joe's trail to serve Sara (there it is
again) her papers. This guy goes all
over the place and gets some of the bigger
laughs of the film.
But this is all just scenery compared to
the real dynamic duo of the film. |

| I'm
talking of course of, first, Bruce Campbell.
Campbell plays Gordon Moore. Sara's
swindling, tycoon of a husband who's trying
to leave her for a hot little blonde and
trying to keep all his cash at the same
time. As a Bruce Campbell fan, I was
constantly cracking up at him with his goofy
southern accent and cheesy car salesman
smile. Bruce's performance was hilarious.
My only regret as far as he's concerned
is that I wish he had a bit more screen
time. Bruce Campbell fans, stand up
and be counted. Our man does a good
job. |

And
now for the second part of our duo of
disaster. I am speaking, of course,
of none other but myself. Yep!
That's right. Joe was also involved
in this little film. I won't tell
ya EXACTLY where I am but I'll give ya
a bit of a location.

Now, allow me to dance with joy that I share screen
time with Bruce Campbell and Elizabeth Hurley.
YAAAAHOOOOO!!!!!! Okay. Back to business.
Overall, this is an entertaining film and worth
the money to check out. Bring a date, buy
some popcorn and enjoy.
Generally, a movie like this would get a mark
of probably 4 out of 5. However, I'M IN
IT!! This flick gets a PERFECT SCORE.
In fact, it gets better than perfect. Serving
Sara gets a 6 out of 5. Ya like that?

Ditto the above. I came to the screening
with the assumption that the movie was going to
be really bad ... but two hours of Liz Hurley in
skimpy outfits, I think I can deal with that.
To my surprise, the movie was actually pretty damn
funny.

And God Bless Liz Hurley! Yowza!
I'm giving it a 4 of 5, Joe's a bit more enthusiastic
about this movie, obviously, but it was definitely
a good flick. |
