You've seen
all the commercials and ads for this new war/action/drama
starring Bruce Willis and Monica Belucci.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua. It's the story
of a Special Ops military squad sent into
Nigeria to rescue a doctor before a swarming
rebel force storms the mission where she works.
However, before the doctor will go anywhere,
she demands that the rest of the people at
her mission be taken along to safety as well. |
Anyone going into this movie would most likely expect
a whole lot of action. I mean, you have what could
be this generations trademark action hero in Bruce
Willis and the director of other action films like
The Replacement Killers and Training Day.
If you go into this movie expecting a non-stop action
thrill ride, you are sorely mistaken. The film tries
a little too hard to be a dramatic piece of cinema.
Not to say that this is necessarily a "bad"
film. But it moves really fucking slow. About halfway
into it, I was getting really tired of seeing tired
and hungry people trudging around a jungle. It's
like "Yeah, these people are hunted by their
own government. They're starving and in need of
real medical attention.....I GET IT. NOW MOVE ON."
It does....but slowly. Laced with some weak dialogue
and even more transparent character development.
However, despite it's predictability and heavy handedness,
it still manages to hold on to a certain charm and
keep a little hold on your interest.
Visually, it's a wonderful film. The camera opening
up on a lush and green African frontier Is refreshing
when all you're used to seeing of Africa is a Sally
Struthers commercial. And the few action sequences
in the film are executed with smooth edits and transitions
and an awesome array of sound and special effects.
The acting lacks and the story is a tad bit forced.
You can probably find a better flick out there to
spend $6.50 on but if you're a Bruce Willis fan,
it's worth checking out. Unfortunately, I was just
not very impressed with it.
My recommendation of a better movie with a fairly
similar plot is the George Cloony flick Three Kings.
