Months have passed since the Brotherhood were defeated
on Liberty Island at the hands of Charles Xavier
and his X-Men. Rogue has been able to adjust to
a normal (or normal as can be) life with her new
friends at the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters.
Logan has travelled to Canada and back again looking
for answers to the mystery of his past and only
finding more questions. And, recently, there was
a dramatic incident involving a mutant at the White
House. Follow all these trails and at the end you'll
find not only one of the best sequels of all time,
but one of the greatest comic book movies to have
ever been released.
I promised everyone that this would be a spoiler
free review so, fear not. There will be nothing
to give away much of the story at all. Let me instead
tell you that if you're an X-Men fan...be it movies,
comics or cartoons...you are in for a MAJOR treat.
This film picks up just about right where the first
one left off and Bryan Singer wastes no time in
delivering exactly what you want to see. It's a
much more serious film than the original and it
works. The first one had a few more "goofier"
moments which, I think, served to help people not
accustomed to the X-Men universe get familiar with
it all. There are still some entertaining and funny
parts in this movie, but the overall feeling is
very serious....pretty dark. The movie is also a
little more violent than the original. A major complaint
of many on the first was that we didn't see Wolverine
let loose and fight enough. I doubt we'll be hearing
those complaints from people walking out of this
one. Wolverine gets downright feral and makes you
get up out of your seat and cheer.
Many of your favorite characters have returned for
the second round. All the X-Men are back and many
of the characters have been improved upon and we
learn a little more about some of them. We also
meet back up with Magneto and Mystique. Unfortunately,
Sabretooth and Toad are absent from this chapter
but I really do hope that we get to see them again
in the near future. Alan Cumming Joins the cast
as the blue skinned, noble hearted Nightcrawler.
What a wonderful and dynamic character to add to
the mix. I look forward to the development of his
character in the series. Brian Cox plays William
Stryker, a military scientist who holds the answers
to some of Logan's past. And you just can't forget
the elusive Lady Deathstrike. Also, look for some
great development between Rogue, Iceman and Pyro
and try to keep track of the cameos from other X-Men
legends in the film.
The pacing of the film is incredible. You'll barley
notice that you've been in the theater for 2 and
a half hours. It just seems to fly by. If anything,
you'll sit in the theater and demand that it not
end sooo soon. We're not bogged down with recaps
or needless dialogue to try to set up a back story
or something. It's all about the story at hand.
I had an awesome time. I can't remember the last
time a movie made me laugh, made me want to cry,
held me awestruck and made me stand up and cheer
the way I did in this one. We also won a bunch of
cool prizes because I'm a walking X-Men encyclopedia.
Seriously tho, the film is excellent and you really
owe it to yourself to not miss this one. |
