I must admit, I've never played a sports game based
on college football before but generally when it
comes to EA Sports, you tend to get high quality
entertainment. Joe had gotten this game and we saw
enough to warrant Gallion and I renting this particular
game over the weekend.
I'll say right off the bat that the create-a-school
option is by far my favorite feature. Completely
customizable in almost every fashion and the ability
to pick a rivalry game kind of topped it off. The
creation of the Central State Tech A&M Cats
was a blast and watching them play in their stadium,
the Litter Box, had its upside as well. Though you
are limited in the amount of created players you
can make, you can always go in an edit your players
to be what you want.
Amazingly enough, the perfect quarterback I created
didn't jump to the NFL after his sophomore year.
Winning a national Championship and two Heisman
Trophy's would be enough for anybody to move on
but not my QB. He came back for his third year to
win a second national championship but in the process,
he got hurt. So no Heisman. And no NFL team would
take him due to that damned injury. So my QB stayed
for his senior year. National Championship #3 and
Heisman Trophy #3. He was golden.
Its stories of victory like that which generally
prove to me that a game is good. When you can tell
war stories that only make you want to go back and
read more, then you've got a game that you're being
entertained by.
I will say though, that I find the actual playing
of the football games somewhat lacking. I haven't
figured out just what exactly its missing but I
could just be spoiled by Madden 2002.
Hurry up Madden 2003!
If you rent this game, I also encourage the Mascot
Game. North Texas vs. TCU was surreal due to the
fact you had a whole team of Eagles playing football
against a whole team of Horned Frogs.
You'd have to be on some sort of medication to see
that outside a video game.
At least I would hope.
Overall, this game has the complete college feel
to it. Fight songs, cheerleaders, college rivalries,
cheerleaders, the whole thing.
Cheerleaders that jump high.
The lack of players names is somewhat odd but understandable
considering NCAA regulations and what not.
So for this first impression, I'd rent this if you're
a college football fan. There's still more to play
but this game has enough going for it so far to
warrant a good grade and at least one rental.
