Those damn goat fucking Zentradi.
I've always hated those bastards ever since they bombarded
the Earth with their weapons of mass destruction. But
they're getting theirs. Oh yes indeed.
Finally somebody has put out a quality Robotech game
and released it in the United States. For us children
of the eighties who watched Robotech like they breath
oxygen, this is an exciting time. Vengeance can be taken
on the 40 foot tall bastards who dared take back what
was theirs.
I won't get into the specifics of the series since
the game itself does that for those who have never watched
the show. Its as good a place as any for fans of the
show and for those who never saw it alike. Suffice it
to say, the game picks up just before the Macross Saga
begins and continues through and past it. You assume
the role of ace pilot Jack Archer and learn to pilot
the various forms of the Veritech fighter. You have
the standard jet fighter form, the typical robot form
and the guardian form which is a jet/robot looking hybrid.
If you saw the show, you know what I'm talking about.
That's one of the beauties of the game as well, though.
You don't really need to have seen the show to enjoy
it. The game's narrative gives the essential info and
lets you get right to the slaughter of the bastard Zentradi.
What's even better is the fact you can destroy them
in a variety of missions. As
you would expect with this kind of game, you have the
prerequisite space/air combat levels. For those fans
of city smashing giant robots, there are multiple levels
where you take your veritech fighter in its robot form
through a city like you'd take a doomed marine through
the building of a Martian research facility. Throw in
some combat in a canyon or two and what you have is
a shit load of dead Zentradi.
While the levels aren't overly complicated, some are
needlessly difficult, making frustration a frequent
guest to your gaming setup. You will fail your missions
more often than you will die and at times your going
to wonder just how in the hell you can realistically
complete some levels. Trust me. Come time to protect
a certain Civic Center, you'll watch the Zentradi Battleoids
blow the place up just for kicks. If you're the type
of person who tends to throw his controller around,
you might think twice about getting this game. Mayhap,
you should rent first and then go buy another controller
to toss
like a rag doll.
If you're a fan of this style of game or the series,
then I couldn't recommend Battlecry much harder. If
you're still on the fence, at least give the game a
rental or two. It might be enough to convince you.
