Popeye's Preseason Rankings
By Popeye
Sports Bar Columnist
That's right boys and girls, summer camps are turning up everywhere and the hint of fall is just around the corner. Over the next few weeks I'll look at where teams are now, where they will finish, bowl predictions, conference breakdowns, and so much more. For my money, you can't beat NCAA football!! Yes, the rivalries, bands, drinking, and of course some action on the gridiron.
Once again the power seems to be in the SEC, the state of Florida and the Big 12. Bowden will bounce back, Spurrier is gone and Fullmer is like a kid in a candy store at this point. So, needless to say...this will be a fun year down south. Over in the midwest the Big 12 looks like hell for any team. Who will survive this jam? The safe money is on Texas but the Horns seem prone to blowing one big game a year and this season will see one of the closest BCS races yet. Miami still has the swagger of championship football, Colorado wants to prove last year was no fluke and the Pac 10 needs to get off it's ass if they want continued respect. They seem to whine WAY too much!

Let's look at how they stack up at this point:

THE BEST:

1. Miami - Living the Dream
I have always lived by the thinking that the champs are the champs until taken out..that hasn't happened and won't for at least a few months from now... I say around November 9th. Though the Canes have lost a handful of very talented seniors, the core is still in place for another run. Led by Heisman favorite Dorsey, and second year coach Coker, the Canes will definitely blow through the Big East and be in the hunt late in the season.

Roadblocks:
September 7 at Florida: Early test in the swamp
October 12 vs Florida State: Bowden will have his boys ready in the battle for the state.
November 9 at Tennessee: UT's house is usually a precursor to a big 'L' for the visitor
December 7 vs Virginia Tech: Big game last year, big game this year

2. Texas - Hooking the Talent
Year in and year out, Texas fans say it's their year, this year they may be right. Loaded with the best roster from top to bottom in the land, Coach Brown's career will be on the shoulders of his four year project, Chris Simms. Simms brings loads of potential to the table with something he's never been, the clear cut leader of the Horns. If Simms can shake his big game tendencies and the D can continue the intensity lead by Johnson, Texas will be in Tempe come the new year.

Roadblocks:
October 12 vs Oklahoma: It doesn't get much better than the Red River shootout
November 2 at Nebraska: NU hasn't lost in Lincoln since '98, to Texas
November 16 at Texas Tech: Lubbock has always haunted the Horns

3. Oklahoma
Coach Stoops has one big question mark coming into the season: how's Jason White's knee? Many writers have the Sooners at the top but that question mark is too much for this one. Oklahoma has a tough conference schedule to endure but they still have that swagger that comes with championship football.

Roadblocks:
October 12 vs Texas: This game means everything to OU and UT
November 2 vs Colorado: CU would love to leave Norman with a 'W'
November 30 at OK State: Hey, remember last year in Norman?

4. Florida
Rookie coach Zook will have his hands full with a hellish schedule, but he can lean on Heisman candidate Rex Grossman and his speedy backs. Many are writing off the Gators with the departure of Spurrier but with Grossman at the helm, the Fun and Gun will be alive and well in the swamp. If the Gators can survive the toughest schedule in the land, they'll be in Tempe...but that's a big if.

Roadblocks:
Sept 7 vs Miami: The champs come to the swamp
Sept 21 at Tennessee: A solid rematch with the Vols
Nov 2 vs Georgia: Georgia will be looking to make a point
Nov 30 at Florida St: A bitter rivalry with all the flair of years past

5. Tennessee- Rocky Mountain High
Except for the SEC championship debacle, Fullmer and the boys felt pretty good about last year. Of course, Georgia continues to be the achilles heel of the Vols and I see that trend continuing as the site shifts back to GA. The real weakness of this year's group is lack of experience or depth for that matter in the DL. Either they'll mature quickly in fall camps or retreat and place the pressure on the backfield. The new, Spurrierless SEC has a wide-eyed Fullmer ready to step up and take his position on top.

Roadblocks:
Sept 21 vs Florida: Took care of Gators in Gainesville last year
Oct 12 at Georgia: On a two game losing streak to Georgia
Nov 9 vs Miami: The defending champs will be coming around the mountain

THE PRETENDERS:

6. Georgia
The bulldogs should be able to have success without Spurrier around to poke them into the loss column. They seem to have the Vols number for the last few years and I don't see that trend changing. Georgia will be very susceptible to the deep ball with a young secondary, especially in this strong conference. Sure, I have UG at 6, but they're still 3rd in the SEC and that title is just a bit out of reach.

Roadblocks:
Oct 12 vs Tennessee: The Dogs have won the last two in this series
Nov 2 at Florida: Will be happy to see a Spurrierless swamp
Nov 30 vs Ga Tech: Sure it's only Tech, but rivals can be pesky.

7. Florida State
Let me just say this: Bowden will not let last year happen again. Four losses, two of them humiliating, will be a thing of the past in Tallahassee. Florida State survived Rix's freshman campaign and look to capitalize on that experience. The scary part of this team is that every lineman - yes, on both sides of the ball - is back and ready to control the trenches. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Roadblocks:
Oct. 12 at Miami: Criminals, I mean Seminoles, look for revenge.
Nov. 30 vs Florida: Bowden looking forward to welcoming Zook to this coaching rivalry

8. Nebraska
The only reason I have NU in the top ten is name, and that's it. Nebraska could fall out of BCS grace early in the season if they don't plug their interior defense that gave up 99 points in the last two games last year. 99!?!?! Come on, that kind of stat will place Solich in the hot seat if this season ends in the same fashion. Also, let's not forget Crouch is no longer on the field and he was most of that offense last year. I think things look bleak for the Huskers.

Roadblocks:
Sept 14 at Penn St: Regardless of talent, Joe Pa is tough to beat in Happy Valley
Oct 26 at Texas A&M: Kyle Field has been tough on Big 12 teams
Nov 2 vs Texas: Horns won last time they came to town
Nov 16 at Kansas St: Despite sliding, Wildcats always play Huskers tough
Nov 29 vs Colorado: Revenge will be had

9. Colorado
In this year's preseason talk, CU is the mystery. Do I judge them for the way they pounded Nebraska and Texas or do I look at how they were destroyed by Oregon and Texas earlier in the year? They've had offseason problems with several suspensions but look for the buffs to ride their talented backfield led by Chris Brown. If Brown can run half as well as he did to close out last year, he'll be fun to watch.

Roadblocks:
Sept 14 vs USC: Never easy
Oct 5 vs Kansas St: K State won big (44-21) last time in Boulder
Nov 2 at Oklahoma: Sooners will be pumped up ALL year at home
Nov 29 at Nebraska: Uh oh.......

10. Michigan
The definite strength of Michigan has to be that defense. Coming off a season where they allowed next to nothing (17.5 ppg), the defense seems even better. They are absolutely stacked in the middle with the likes of Victor Hobson. However, just like Oklahoma, there is no clear starter and not many teams can thrive with a two headed system. (see Texas last two years)

Roadblocks:
Aug 31 vs Washington: Huskies ready to shake off disappointing Holiday Bowl
Nov 2 vs Michigan St: Spartans stole Michigan's fire about this time last year
Nov 23 at Ohio State: As you can tell, rivalries are all over this list.

THE REST:

11. Washington: Strong season ended on sour note
12. LSU: They are out to defend that SEC title
13. Washington State: Going for their third 10-win season in six years
14. Ohio State: Should come down to OSU vs Michigan for Rose Bowl berth
15. Virginia Tech: Noel or Vick, Noel or Vick?!?!?
16. Oregon: Eight home games but without Harrington's fourth quarter leadership
17. Georgia Tech: 17 starters back to make run for ACC title
18. Michigan State: Need to get by cross state rivals first
19. South Carolina: Lou Holtz will always have something up his sleeve
20. Maryland: Can the Terps show continued success?
21. Syracuse: The Orangemen bring a potent group of wideouts
22. Alabama: Should have a strong 8 or 9 win season despite NCAA sentence.
23. Marshall: Circle Sept 12th on the calender, at Virginia Tech
24. Wisconsin: I hate Wisconsin, but they have talent.
25. Illinois: When does basketball season start?
