Here we go again….
This week the hot topic around the water
cooler is the newly released BCS poll.
Even though the poll in Week 8, this week,
never matches up with the poll when it
actually matters at the end of the season,
for some reason people love to talk about
this initial poll? If there is a major
theme this year it has to be the computer
polls. I don’t know about you but it makes
me sick to think about a computer deciding
who should play for a championship. Of
course, I believe this year it will all
work out in the end.
I don’t like everything about the BCS
rankings. Hell, I already mentioned my
dislike of the computer aspect. But I’ll
say this, in the short history of the
BCS, I feel that each year at the end
of the year, the right team has come out
on top. Call me crazy but out of this
messed up equation, the champions have
taken the spotlight and earned their title.
Let’s take last year as an example. There
was much debate about whether or not Nebraska
deserved a big over Oregon and Colorado.
After all, didn’t Nebraska lose it's last
game before the poll, a stomping at the
hands of non other than Colorado. They
weren’t beat; they were absolutely dominated
on that cold day in Boulder. How bout
Oregon? With Harrington at the helm, the
Ducks rode through the regular season
with only one loss to Stanford amidst
wins over three ranked teams. Three??
That’s not many is it. At least the computer spit that small number out and
decided Oregon didn’t deserve the shot.
Then there’s Colorado. They recovered
from some early losses to teams like Texas
and stormed through the second half of
the season. They exacted revenge on Texas,
destroyed Nebraska and claimed they’re
first Big 12 Championship. Shouldn’t that
hardware mean something? The Big12 isn’t
just another conference, ya know?
You’re thinking where am I going with
this and the answer is simple. Each team
eliminated themselves. Coming into
the last poll, about 6 teams had a golden
chance and all fell. Colorado was embarrassed
in Tempe, Texas lost in Dallas, and Tennessee
lost to LSU. The madness continued to
the point where I stepped back and thought
about it. The best team won the championship
last year, Miami. There wasn’t a team
capable of beating them. They were too
fast, too tough, and too talented to be
knocked off their perch, sans their near
miss with BC.
This year will be no different. Teams
will come and go within the BCS and in
the end I feel confident the right team
will survive. Should there be a playoff?
Absolutely, but we’re doing just fine.
