CAPTURE REPORT

February 5, 2002

The last of three men believed to have killed an armored car driver is in custody today. Thanks to an alert viewer of America's Most Wanted: America's Fights Back, the last man allegedly involved in a robbery-homicide is behind bars. The arrest of Jamal Starks in New Haven, Connecticut on February 5, 2002 came as a direct result of his appearance on AMW.

Starks was wanted for the 1997 murder of Andre Herring, a driver for Armored Security Van Company. On September 26, 1997, Herring and Joseph Micieli were making their rounds. When they arrived at the Suffolk County National Bank in Riverhead, New York, they were ambushed. Richard Lie and Jeffus Leftenant attacked them with gun's blazing. Starks is believed to be the third accomplice. When all was said and done, four men were shot in the gunfight. Unfortunately, Herring was the lone fatality. Blie and Leftenant were arrested and convicted of their crimes but Starks remained the lone fugitive.

AMW profiled this story on January 26, 2002 and updated it the following week. That's when an AMW viewer saw the story and recognized Starks. The tipster said Starks was living in New Haven, Connecticut, giving an exact address and said he was living with a woman. Suffolk County detectives went along with New Haven Police.

Just before noon, the two agencies descended on the house and surrounded it. At first, Starks refused to open the door so the police contacted the landlord who provided a key. The cops chose to execute a high-risk entry, using SWAT police with ballistic shields. Instead of a quick rush, though, the men slowly and methodically searched each room until they located a man laying in bed. He was taken into custody but refused to give any information regarding his identity, but police had two aces in the hole. First, they knew he had a scar on his left leg from the gun battle. Secondly, they had his fingerprints on file because he'd served in the Navy. Both of those indicators pointed directly to his identification.

On February 6, 2002, Starks made his first appearance in court where he is fighting extradition.
