The State of Music: The Teeny Bopper Age
This has been an interesting time in music.
It’s the first time in a while that
four “Ages” have fought sooo
violently for control. The band Creed is
at fault for much of the downfall of the
Rock Age. When they first came on the scene,
they brought a song called “My Own
Prison” That was actually well received
by many music fans, including myself. They
quickly became a force in Rock, but soon
we saw the band for what it truly was. It
didn’t take them long to jump right
into the ballads. We were seeing the first
signs of the re-emergence of boy bands like
The Backstreet Boys and the popularity was
growing. So, in comes Creed with the first
of many of the major ballads of this generation’s
Pussy Rock Age to keep up with the teeny
boppers. Like Gabriel’s trumpet heralding
the coming of God, Creed’s “With
Arms Wide Open” opened the flood gates
and soon we were plunged into the Pussy
Rock Age. Groups like Korn and Limp Bizkit
began to fade away as people named Britney
Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson
and a bunch of groups with guys named Danny,
Joey, Nick and Jason started to make their
way into the spotlight. At this point, rock
was pretty much forgotten and acts like
Brandy and Aaliyah started to pop up out
of the woodwork. The Rap/ Hip Hop Age was
popping up. For a while there, it looked
like the Teeny Bopper Age was getting ready
to decline as the more urban sounds started
to take over. But then…..
September 11th, 2001
America was out and out attacked on it’s
own soil in the most gruesome display since
the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Suddenly, the
tide shifted. America became angry again.
Red blooded Americans were looking for an
angry voice to listen to and, without warning,
the Rock Age was reborn. Bands like Godsmack,
Tool, Papa Roach, Disturbed and Drowning
Pool were seeing HUGE leaps in sales as
angry, white Americans were looking for
an outlet. The Rock Age was back but it
only lasted for a short time. Again, Creed
comes in with songs like “My Sacrifice”
and “One Last Breath” to completely
kill the momentum of angry music. With Creed’s
assault with ballads, other bands heed the
call. Groups like The Calling, Train and
Nickleback follow suit with their own ballads.
Add to that, the kids who were going back
to their Britney and N Sync and the result
is a VERY QUICK trip through the Pussy Rock
age. Although, we stand in the Teeny Bopper
Age, realize that The Rap/ Hip Hop Age was
starting to come on strong. I predict that
we’ll be seeing the inside of the
Rap/ Hip Hop Age very soon.

Now for a little bit of
positivity. Has anybody heard this new
band called Dirty
Vegas? The first time I heard this
group, I was watching Mtv and a buddy
goes "Hey, man. Check out this
video. It looks kinda weird." So,
I'm watching it and I instantly go nuts
for this song called "Days Go By".
It's really a hoppin' tune and the video
is, for the record, pretty fucking sweet
as well. I don't know much about the
rest of the album but I'll be picking
it up here soon and I'll give ya the
verdict. |
